Mummy, why are you giving all our money to God?

Hi guys, how was your week been? For me, it feels like I can no longer tell the difference between a weekday and weekend, everyday seems to be rolling into themselves. Nonetheless, we remain thankful.

A few days ago I remembered a conversation Princess T and I had when she was 4years old. We had just sat in church on a Sunday morning and as we were putting our offerings into envelopes before the service , she goes  “Mum, why do we give all our money to God?”

She said this loud enough for the person that sat next to us to laugh.  On this blog, we’ve had a discussion about talking to kids about money (click here to read)  but this is specifically about money as it relates to giving.

I think it’s important that I point out that kids learn to relate with money by watching their parents, either they develop a loving relationship with money or free flowing anxiety, it is determined by their parents attitudes.

I would like to share some of what I discussed with Princess T  over lunch that day as I realised saying it loud to myself reinforced my own beliefs and I think this will help some people.

  • God gives us everything

No one can receive anything unless God gives it from heaven

John 3 v 27

Many of us have been taught wrongly but the beauty about life is that we can unlearn and learn new things. God gives us everything that we have, it all comes from His hands. Recognising this strengthens our trust in God and also makes giving easier

  • You can never lose by giving

The general rule of maths is that when you give 3 oranges out of 6, you’ve 3 less oranges but in life (not only in Christianity), you have more by giving.  Again, even I still need a lot of unlearning to do. No one becomes poorer by giving, just doesn’t work like that.

Give freely and become more wealthy; be stingy and lose everything

Proverbs 11 v 24 NLT

  • Our Giving is an act of worship

Whenever we give to God, it is an act of worship and should be taken seriously. Can you remember the story of Solomon’s offering to God as an act of worship?

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also

Mathew 6 v 21 NLT

Recently, I was reading that scripture in Luke 12 v 21 and it has been on my mind ;

Yes, a person is a fool to store up earthly wealth but not have a rich relationship with God.

Luke 12 v 21
  • You cannot out give God

No matter how much we give, we cannot out give the one who gave us everything in the first place. So when next you hear a sermon about giving and start to think the church wants your money, remind yourself that you cannot out give God.

God has given us the greatest gift of all which is Jesus.

What shall I return to the Lord for all his goodness to me?

Psalms 116 v 12 NIV
  • Money is not the only thing we give

I’ve realised a lot of people, even rich folks are uncomfortable with discussions about money and it’s all  psychology based on our environment and upbringing (Ihave a book I can recommend to help with this , send me an email if interested – lessonsfrommydaughters@gmail.com)

I told Princess T that money is not the only thing we can give people and God.

We can give God our thanks daily, our time by spending time with Him and also serve Him.

We should give people our kindness, time, love and prayers.

Do you guys think I covered a good number of points? Please share additional helpful points in the comment section. Also, If you’ve any lessons from your kid(s) you would like to share, kindly send me an email (email above).

I leave you with the peace of God and thank you for reading!!
