Mum, how do you get oil in your lamp?

Hi there! I hope you had a good week and have some rest time planned this
weekend. A few days ago, I was listening to a song that said, ‘Give me oil in my
lamp, keep me burning,’ and my 8-year-old asked, Mum, how do you get oil in your
lamp?

Oil in your lamp in this context refers to intimacy with God and readiness for the
return of our Lord Jesus Christ, exemplified by the 10 virgins as stated in the book of
Matthew 25 v 1.

Five of them were foolish and ill-prepared, for they took no extra oil for their lamps. –
Matthew 25 v 2 TPT

How then do you add oil in your lamp?

  • Be Consistent in Prayer

be unceasing and persistent in prayer – I Thess 5 v 17

Create a lifestyle of prayer, this can be by having a specific prayer time daily which
you work around, setting alarms/times in the day when you stop all activities and just
intentionally turn your heart to God (doesn’t have to be a long time).
It can really be whatever works for you and your lifestyle; what matters is that you
are in continual communion with God.

  • Give yourself to the word of God

Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one
another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to
God with gratitude in your hearts. – Colossians 3 v 16

Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. –
James 1 v 22

Scripture is life; Scripture is Jesus

Scripture says, I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up. If you stay with the word and give yourself wholly to it without doubt or mixing it with anything else, it is sure to produce results in your life.

The word of God grounds you and sustains you till the very end.

  • Surround yourself with like minded people

The 5 wise virgins were in the company of each other, while the foolish ones also
had themselves. If you desire to get better at/with anything, stay around like minded
people.

Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm. –
Proverbs 13 v 20

  • Seek mentors

Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety. – Proverbs 11 v 14

There are people who have walked farther and faster than you, seek them out even
if it means paying for it.

What you value, you pay for. Many people are willing to pay for financial
mentors/services or career mentors but not spiritual mentors, I think this is a mindset
we need to change and seek to improve ourselves.
These are just a few points I shared with her, I expect you might have some which I have not mentioned; please write them in the comment section.

Thank you for reading and sharing as always. I leave you with the peace of God.
