Hello there! I always start these blogs by asking if you are well. I know it might sound cliché and more like an opening phrase, I just thought to let you know it isn’t, and I truly hope you are well and that you can sometimes sit with that question and acknowledge the truth.
A few weeks ago, my daughters and I were driving somewhere, and we already had another appointment to get to.
As we passed a store, Baby T asked if we could stop and have a look around (window shopping really). I reminded her that we had somewhere else to be.
She replied, “But it doesn’t cost anything.”
Before I could answer, Princess T said: “It costs time.”
That jumped at me, and I later spent some time reflecting on it. It is easy to misuse or waste our time, after all, it is not a physical asset like money.
So teach us to number our days that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom. Psalms 90 v 12
The Christian Standard Bible says, ‘Teach us to number our days carefully that we may develop wisdom in our hearts.’
This means that as we carefully take account of our time, we grow in wisdom.
Audit your time
What you spend most of time doing reflects what matters most to you. Is it idle chit chat, doom scrolling, sleeping, reading, working?
If you are not sure, think about your last 3 days, assuming these were your normal days.
Time spent is a seed; it will yield a harvest.
Time is the ultimate resource
Money lost can be earned again, opportunities and possessions can be replaced, but once time is gone, it is gone.
This is why wasting time is more serious than we realise. Anyone or anything that wastes your time is taking something from you that is irreplaceable.
This makes time an asset. Not everything deserves your time. Not every conversation, distraction, even opportunities deserve your time.
We should always ask, ‘What am I exchanging this time for?’ Is it of a higher value? Does it matter to me?
Give God time
Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed . Mark 1 v 35.
Do you ever wonder why Jesus, the son of the most High God, spent so much time in prayer? I mean, He had everything He wanted.
I believe it was to show us how to live, how to stay connected to our source.
As humans, we know the more time we spend with a person, the more we know them and even begin to act like them. The more time we spend doing an activity, we get better at it.
So is it with God, when we invest our time in fellowshipping with God and knowing His ways, we become more like Him and grow in knowledge of who He is.
Time spent with God is a seed that yields a great harvest both in the world here and the world to come.
Make a decision today to give a fraction of your day to God in prayer and the word. Be intentional about how you ‘spend’ your time, for whatever you sow, you shall reap.
